Stage 2 Letters to James Cook

Stage 2 History writing task: Me Please Mr Cook!

Imagine you are writing a letter to James Cook so that you can join him on the Endeavour expedition! The boat is setting sail on August 28th, 1768 and you are desperate to be on board! Think about what we have learned about life in England during this time. Are you rich or are you poor? Are you an orphan or the son of a Duke?! How did you hear about the voyage? Did you see the boat getting prepared? How did you find out about the expedition? Are you the servant of a scientist or artist?

You need to imagine for yourself:

  • Your name, age, and family

  • Your skills, passions, abilities and interests. Are you good at something that could be useful? Are you passionate about flora? Have you read stories of faraway lands and dream of exploration? Have you heard about Columbus?

You need to persuade Lieutenant Cook that you should be considered for the crew. Perhaps you could be his servant? The Cook’s servant, a sailor, take care of the animals because you grew up on a farm? Maybe you’re an incredible artist and want to learn from Banks? Perhaps you have no skills but your father was tragically killed at sea in the war with the French and you want to be a sailor just like him!

Mina McGlashan 4S

Dear Lieutenant James Cook, my name is Myan and I wish to come with you. I’m 12 years of age and I come from a royal family. My Father is none other than the King and my Mother is the Queen. I’m the youngest of nine and I hate being overruled. I found out about this expedition from my lady in waiting who I thank with all my heart.

The job that I want for your expedition is the position of a doctor. I have heard that a very fine surgeon will be coming along as well. If you are worried about having another mouth to feed, don't worry because if you give me a cabin with a stove then I will cook my own food with my supplies (I’m also a wonderful cook, so if you want quality food then let me help).

Now I will go into why I want this job in more detail with the two main reasons. The first reason is that I have been overshadowed by all my siblings. Would you like it if you always heard people talking about all your siblings but never you? I’ll answer for you, no. No, you wouldn’t, especially if you heard your servants talking about your siblings' great feats in battle then, when they saw you, talking about wonderful embroidery.

My second reason is that women have always been expected to settle down, have children and generally do nothing. I need that to change. Soon I will be of the age where I’m meant to marry. I can’t have weird strangers after me just because I have money and I’m the princess. Would you like it if we swapped? No, no you wouldn’t. So I need to change the world's opinion of females because we’re strong and some of us are better than men. Did you know that just yesterday I got a bullseye from 50m away? Did you know that my parents hushed it up because they don’t want women to have rights? No, you didn’t.

Finally, I wish to compliment you on your amazing skills in not only one but three areas, Mathematics, Navigation and Astronomy. Your skills alone should be enough to get us the luck for the voyage (although let's not actually do that). So please consider my request and I’m begging you to accept me.

Yours Sincerely Myan
