4Cs - Collaboration, Communication, Critical Reflection and Creativity

What are the 4Cs?

As a school, we recognise the 4Cs - collaboration, communication, critical reflection and creativity - as the foundations for lifelong learning.

These capabilities provide both students and staff with the tools to deeply engage with learning and learning processes, as well as better understanding themselves and others as learners.

Collaboration

Collaboration creates deep and meaningful connections within and between our learners, building teamwork, empathy and influence. By learning together, we deepen our knowledge and understanding, build confidence, encourage risk taking and develop critical interpersonal skills.

Communication

Communication helps us better understand ourselves as learners and gives us the confidence to speak up for ourselves and others. Promoting student voice, encouraging the sharing of thoughts and ideas, and challenging perceptions, allows learners to consider new perspectives and possibilities in their learning. Effective communication supports students to approach their learning in different ways and make connections they might not have made independently.

Critical Reflection

Critical Reflection allows us to interrogate why and how we learn, better understand learning processes, choose appropriate and effective strategies for learning and challenge ourselves to think widely and deeply. Reflecting on our metacognition and motivation can help us better understand what we need to succeed as learners and what dispositions we can use to help support us.

Creativity

Creativity helps students to respond to and embrace challenges in their learning, problem solve, and develop curiosity and grit in their learning. Through becoming comfortable with uncertainty and embracing the unexpected, we open ourselves to new ways of thinking and allow creativity to thrive.

Our Journey

At Forest Lodge, we are committed to developing the 4Cs skills in our students and our staff. We recognise that the 4Cs need to be explicitly taught, and that is what we aim to do. As we are just setting off on our Transforming Schools journey, our staff are gradually beginning to include 4Cs processes and dispositions into our programs and practice. Staff and students will be actively engaging with the 4Cs capabilities, being playful and open in our learning journey to enhance our teaching practice and support our students in continuously developing their ability to effectively use the 4Cs.
