This year in history, Stage 3 have been focusing on important events in the development of democracy in Australia. One of the events we studied closely was the Eureka Stockade. Below are some of the poems written firstly by Rose and then by Oscar in 5/6M.
Soft blue cloth for the everblue sky
Five stars for the Southern Cross
People swarm together
And roar for rights
Until their voices are lost
Fires are constantly ablaze
Eating up licences - hundreds alight
Heat and smoke fill up the space
As diggers cheer
A bloody battle erupts in the stockade
Between the diggers and the soldiers
"Down with the licence fees", diggers yell
As the lemonade man is shot in the mouth
The next day the battle ends and the count begins
Twenty-two miners officially dead
Five soldiers were shot in the head
This was the tragedy left behind from the Eureka Stockade
By Rose
The black sky heard the wounded cry.
As bayonets impaled, with screeching cries.
The Eureka flag still flies high giving hope to those who have died.
Blood has been shed making the fields red.
For those who have survived, they will never be forgotten
Those who have fallen will be remembered as heroes.
The battle that fought for freedom
The battle that hoped for justice
The battle that caused families to weep
The battle that changed Australia's history
The Eureka Stockade
